It feels like you're trapped in depression.

Are you tired of feeling withdrawn and disinterested?

You try to stop it, but sometimes the thoughts and feelings consume you and there's no escape.

Sometimes you're stuck in sad, tired, lonely, distracted, or angry.

You're exhausted from having to work so hard to keep everything together even when you dip so low.

Depression often shows up in your body. Maybe you feel:

  • pain or body aches

  • a pit in your stomach

  • heavy and slow

  • crushed with guilt

  • hollow or empty

You keep trying the things you’ve learned and been told you can do to be happier.

Sometimes you feel hopeless and helpless.

Depression is a persistent sadness that interferes with your ability to function or enjoy life.

Feeling depressed is not something you choose.

Depression can come at predictable times or seasons, unexpectedly, during hardship, day to day life, or even in good times.

Your body might have learnt it's not safe to feel and close you off from everything and everyone in your life.

It's common to feel guilt and shame, and withdraw from relationships or lose interest in activities.

Many people experience depression that limits their capacity to:

  • eat or sleep

  • think clearly

  • move or exercise

  • feel positively

  • study or work

A depression therapist can help you understand and care for your emotions.

You can learn to trust your feelings will not hurt you.

Life doesn't have to be hard all the time. You can move through and feel a full range of emotions, from suffering to pleasure.

When you spend less effort pushing away pain, you have more energy to participate fully in what truly matters to you.

You are not alone. People care about you.

You can love and be loved.

You can feel joy in your body and look forward to the good that is yet to come.

What if you could...

  • feel lighter

  • move freely

  • laugh and play

  • stay engaged

  • enjoy the moment

A good therapist helps you move through depression, not fight it.

It's okay to feel depressed. It’s okay to feel all the things. You are not weak, you are human. Living, breathing, feeling, hurting, and healing.

You can learn to accept, tolerate, regulate, express, and release your emotions.

Counselling gives you a space to acknowledge the difficulties you are facing and keep going forward.

Depression therapy can help you:

  • get moving again

  • build social support

  • maintain boundaries

  • improve relationships

  • nurture better health

You might still have some questions or concerns about depression counselling...

What is depression?

Depression is a persistent yet sometimes intermittent sadness that repeatedly interferes with your ability to function or enjoy life; depression can affect your physical, mental, relational, and emotional health.

What causes depression?

There is no single cause of depression, but many contributors include substances, prescriptions, life events, biological factors, stress, trauma, relationships, abuse, isolation, anxiety, grief, job loss, illness, and chronic pain.

What are the symptoms of depression?

The DSM-5 outlines the primary symptoms of depression as depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure, weight loss or appetite change, reduced physical movement, fatigue or low energy, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, difficulty concentrating, and suicidal ideation.

What are the types of depression?

Sometimes depression is defined as mild, moderate, major (clinical depression or major depressive disorder), or persistent (dysthymia). Specific types of depression include seasonal affective disorder (SAD), postpartum depression, psychotic depression, or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

Should I take medication for depression?

At Therapy Alberta we believe in a whole person approach to mental health. While research has established therapy is effective for treating depression, it is important to remember your situation is unique, and a combination of therapy and medication may be what works best for you. You can talk to your doctor about medication. Therapy can be effective for people who do not respond well to medication or prefer not to take it.

How much does depression counselling cost?

Our depression therapy sessions are $220 with a Psychologist or Social Worker with direct billing for most insurance companies, or a receipt to claim for re-imbursement or as a medical expense on your taxes. Depression counselling sessions with a Certified Canadian Counsellor are $180; check with your insurance to confirm coverage for mental health counselling. Sliding scale fees are available.
